Nigeria students stormed the street of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory today protesting against the closure of higher institutions of learning, urging the Government to re-open schools if market and religious gatherings could be allowed.
Great numbers of students were at the noon hours of Wednesday, 19th of August seen protesting peacefully on the street of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with placards containing different write-ups ranging from “Open our institutions now”, “We say no to schools closure”, to “FG, end issues with ASUU”, ” We want to learn and graduate”, among many others.
The angry students changed the sweet atmospheric sound in the cool environment to an uncomfortable one through lyrical songs, choruses and chants depicting anger, grief, dejection and oppression.
While addressing news men at the scene of the protests, Elijah Felix, the President of the National Association of University Students said;
“How do you close our Universities, Polytechnics and other academic Institutions and you are telling people you want to close the virus? Our demands are that our schools should be re-opened. ASSU strike has been lingering in this country for so long. Everytime the Government has issues with ASUU, it is the students that are at the receiving end” adding that “Everybody who is in school for a four-year programme ends up spending 6 or more years” adding that”.
While stating clearly their demand, Elijah said “We want the Government to find a way to address this and stop putting our generation at risk”.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government in April has ordered the closure of all Tertiary Institutions as part of the measures taken to curbing the spread of Covid 19 and ever since then, it has remained shut even after worship centers, Airports, Markets, social gatherings among many others shut alongside are now opened.
The clash between Lauretta Onochie, a presidential aide and Bishop Oyedepo of Living Faith Church Over the New CAMA Law has further stirred up debates and disputes among top political and Religious in Nigerians.
The provisions of this Law as it pertains to religious bodies pose agitations since Nigeria is made up of people of diverse religions, basically Muslims and Christians in which, anything relating to religion in Nigeria is considered sensitive.
Apparently, the provisions of this new law seek to regulate the activities of religious bodies and other associations. Section 839 provides that the Corporate Affairs Commission (“CAC”) may by order, suspend the trustees of an association or a religious body and appoint an interim manager(s) to coordinate its affairs, where there has been misconduct or mismanagement of properties of the association or religious body for the interest of the public.
Looking deeply into this, it’s a clear case of lack of trust in government, fear of exploitations, suppression and mismanagement of funds and properties.
Reacting to this, Bishop David Oyedepo questioned the rationale behind the inclusion of religious centres and charity organisations into the Company and Allied Matters Acts (CAMA). According the Bishop, the church works on the pattern delivered by God not the pattern of man. The government has no power to appoint people over churches.
Responding to the statement made by the Oyedepo, the Lauretta Onochie, a Presidential aide through her twitter handle said, “I hope this is not true. If it is, Oyedepo will have to manufacture his own country and live by his own laws” adding that “as long as he lives and operates within the entity called Nigeria, he will live by Nigerian rules and laws, he will do as he’s told by the law”. “Enough of lawlessness!” She further stated
This clash of disagreement between these two top leaders has further generated a lot of war of words among top Nigeria political and religious leaders including the average members of the public.
Dr. Charles Omole, a lawyer and political strategies has responded to the issue maintaining that the controversy over the new CAMA Law is unnecessary, as most of the provisions are standard practice in many nations, but the lack of trust in government has made folks suspicious of anything that seems to give government more powers, due to the culture of abuse, overreach by government.
On the other hand, Primate Elijah Ayodele, the leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church who described this act as a means of fighting the church, saying it is a strategy the government employed to meddling with church affairs, which is totally unacceptable by him, He said: “Nobody can shut down my account. No one can can get a trustee for me. The government needs to be cautioned. They don’t have any thing to do with the church. It’s not the government that brought land for me. They didn’t do evangelism for me. They didn’t build for me.”
“They are just jokers” he asserted.
From voice-pop gathered by GGB reporters concerning this issue, some Nigerians are of the view that “a secular person can’t interpret how a religious organisation conducts its activities when he does not even understands it” Itobi Gideon Opined. Ani Precious asked “can you entrust a muslim to the affairs of a mega church? or can you entrust a christian to the affairs of a central mosque? In a state like kaduna, can you entrust the affairs of the church to anti christian government?” adding that “we need to be careful with this act before we open a pandora boxs”.

Obadiah Mailafia, a former CBN Deputy Governor has recently come out to state clearly again while insisting with facts that a Northern Governor is the commander of Boko-Haram.
This weighty allegations has raised a lot of dust within the country which couldn’t be swept under the carpet.
This was made known in an interview he had with Abuja 95.1 fm on Monday.
According to the Ex-deputy Governor, Boko Haram was plotting to start civil war in Nigeria by 2022, in which part of the plan was to wipe out some prominent politicians in Nigeria from their homes in the urban areas after citizens in rural areas have been totally wiped out.
Mailafia said ‘’During the lock-down, the insurgents were moving and distributing arms and ammunition across the country. We have met with some of their repentant high commanders, they have sat down with us not once, not twice” adding that “They told us that a prominent elected Nigeria politician in the North is their(Boko-Haram) commander”.
The 63 years old Economist further clearified that “Boko Haram and the bandits are one and the same”, saying “during this lock-down their planes were moving up and down as if there was no lock-down.”
He said, “President Buhari’s government is blamable for the southern Kaduna killings. The body language of this administration shows clearly that they have a hand in the killings, no doubt about it.”
On hearing this allegation, the Northern Governors Forum( NGF) Chairmaned by Gov. Lalong who doubles as the Governor of Plateau State has through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, said the forum was worried about the weighty allegation made by Dr. Mailafia which must be thoroughly investigated, stating that “We as Northern Governors have met severally to discuss insecurity in the northern region and the nation at large where we did not only condemn the activities of terrorist groups such as Boko Haram, bandits, armed robbers, kidnappers and other criminals, but also engaged the President and all heads of security agencies in finding solutions to the problem.”
Lalong further stated clearly that the Forum does not and will not support the activities of any criminal group.
The Northern Governor’s Forum (NGF) further calls for investigation which led to him(Obadiah Mailafia) being summoned by officers of DSS on Wednesday, 12th of August for questioning which he honoured.
Mailafia who spoke with journalists immediately after his release by the Department of State Service(DSS) which was facilitated by a public peace advocate , Rev Para -Mallam, who signed for his release at the end of his encounter with the security officers, maintained that He is a man of peace who wouldn’t give room for any form of violence.
Boldly saying “If I retract anything , I won’t be able to leave this place. I am a man of peace , I am not a man of violence.”
“I must never give up on Nigeria , if need be , I will die for Nigeria” he added.
It would be of note that measures to revealing the name of the Northern Governor whom he allegedly accused of being the commander of the Boko-Haram terrorist group was aborted as questions in this regard were stylishly turned down.
