Dr. Uche Ebeze, one of the most famous and social lecturers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) specifically known for his style of dressing, special skills in drumming and dancing has at the late hours of Monday, 6th of July come out to decry the unprofessional attitude of health workers in the public health sector.
The one time Head of Mass Communication Department in UNIZIK while lamenting over the situation surrounding the health sector, during this pandemic period through his Facebook handle in alarm screamed
“There is a problem! People who have malaria or typhoid no longer go to hospitals for proper and professional medical attention because the moment they visit hospitals, they are tagged COVID-19 Patients. The sick now resort to self-medication at home and sometimes die. Then friends and relatives begin to speculate he died of the dreaded COVID-19. Then sudden fear and apprehension begins to grip those that have contacts with him.”
He further wrote “let me ask- does it mean that people can no longer fall sick? Were people not falling sick before this pandemic? If one coughs, people around him will take to their heels. You sneeze they shout “Coro Coro”. Now doctors are scared of touching patients with malaria or typhoid.”
Dr. Ebeze while advising health workers said “in as much as we need to be careful, we equally need to apply human face to the medical attention given to patients”
He went on to pray saying “May God Almighty never allow you to fall sick talk less of going to hospital. The moment you are there automatically, you are a COVID-19 suspect or even patient”
God help us!” He added.
This is coming few days after the former Ondo State commissioner of health died of the Covid-19 infection and had taken to self medication in his residence before the symptoms went beyond control. This singular act has left the masses in deep thought while trying to figure out whether both the medical practitioners and the “rich” have lost hope in the Nigeria health sector.
